Can Social Media Be Good?

Can Social Media Be Good?

In the age of digital globalisation, we are more connected to each other than ever before in human history, at the same time, we are increasingly feeling lonelier and more depressed. Is social media bad for us? Are we mentally unhealthy because of social media?

Today, three billion people, about 40% of the world’s population, use online social media. On average, we scroll for two hours per day on different social media platforms. Many studies have been made but it is hard to draw clear black and white conclusions. Social media can have a negative effect on our mood, well-being, and self-esteem and there are links to higher stress, depression, and anxiety levels. At the same time, studies show some befits of social media. [BBC]

Social media has clearly its problems. At the same time, social media is developing so quickly that science can’t keep up. We are in fact pondering if it’s the culture that we have created to put down. Maybe we are living in the midst of change what it comes to social media behaviour? More importantly, are you aware of how it makes you feel when you scroll down your feed? Are you conscious about the people and brands you are following?

As you have noticed, we have lately been curious about slow life and minimalism. Living slowly can open us to our inner world, which can sometimes be the reason why people don’t want or can't to slow down. Many can’t spend time alone and over consume social media to keep busy. Could less be more in social media too? Even though slow living does not mean that we should throw our electronics away, instead of letting technology use us, we can find ways to use technology as a tool. Nobody wants a social media addiction so we welcome more conscious use of technologies - both in private and business.

This article consists of very important questions to ask oneself. We, as a brand too,  put regularly thought on our social media behaviour. We believe social media has a lot to offer but many times, it lacks authenticity. Also, nobody likes spam. Just like any culture we are part of, we can also change the culture in social media by sharing more what can have a positive effect on us without body shaming, feeling guilt, or unnecessary comparison. Make sure your follow accounts and you share content that makes you feel good!
